Maastricht is a little bit of the odd one out in the Netherlands. Now, I know this tends to sound slightly negative, but hear me out. For one, the majority of the country is flat - as flat as a pancake. The only proper hills we have are in the most southern point of the NL, right on the border with Belgium and Germany. That's right, Maastricht is in the heart of this region. But not only the natural surroundings and the accompanying limestone quarries and miles and miles of limestone caves stand out from the rest of the country.
There's an incredible amount of feel and character to this town on the Maas River as well: Gothic and Romanesque architecture, medieval alleys and the Burgundian lifestyle (people here love their food, drink and 'gezelligheid'!) all add to the city's high-valued status. (And not to mention that one of the most beautiful book shops in the world is located here, and Maastricht is also the home of André Rieu who you definitely have come across one way or another 😉)
