As the First World War dragged into a 3rd and 4th year, memorials were already being built around Australia, to commemorate lives lost and families and communities affected. In a nation of less than 5 million people, that was nearly everyone.
There are thousands of war memorials around the country today, in small towns and big cities, where Australians can pay their respects. The War Memorial seen here in Fremantle, atop Monument Hill was inaugurated on Remembrance Day, 1928, exactly 10 years after the guns fell silent on the Western Front.
This Sunday on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, we can reflect on not just the men who lost their lives in battle, but the remarkable women who nursed them, the women and children who had to keep a farm or small business going at home, or work in a factory for the first time. I also think of the horses, millions of them, that were also killed in the 4 years of fighting. As much as we might know the stories of Gallipoli or Fromelles, the Great War permeated all aspects of life at home. #war#remembrance#thankful#armisticeday#worldwar1#reflection#coloursofaustralia#fremantle#westernaustralia@westernaustralia#wa#freo#memorial
