  • The Rio-Antirio Bridge, officially named Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge because it was Prime Minister Charilaos Trikoúpis in 1889 that first expressed the necessity of building a bridge between Rio and Antirio. Built by French-Greek consortium led by French group Vinci SA, with lead architect, Berdj Mikaelian, its total cost was estimated at €630 million, funded by the Greek state, the consortium and loans by the European Investment Bank. The project is a great engineering achievement as work commenced with site preparation and dredging in July 1998, to be finished ahead of schedule and within budget. Furthermore it is one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges, 2252m long, and longest of the fully suspended type, consisting of three central spans of 560m each, and a span of 286m at each end. The approach viaduct on the Rio side is 380m and on the Antirio side 228m. The structure rests on 4 enormous concrete pylons, whose height reaches 160m above sea level, with foundations with diameter of 90m, are positioned 50 to 65m deep on the seabed which has been reinforced by inserting 500 specially designed metal pipes as the Corinthian Gulf is in an active seismic zone. The deck of the cable-stayed bridge is made of composite steel-concrete segments, prefabricated then installed in cantilever on either side of the pylons and suspended with stay cables made of galvanized strands with multiple anti-corrosion lining. Completion was celebrated on the 7th of August 2004 in a blaze of fireworks, to the music of Mikis Theodorakis. The following day it was ceremonially inaugurated as the Olympic Torch passed over the Bridge on its way to Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games, and on August 12th, eve of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the bridge was opened to traffic. The bridge is under a 35-year concession contract operated by the company GEFYRA S.A. - Greek for "bridge" French Greek Carrier of Oversea Connection of Rio - Antirio. The income gained from the hefty tolls pay back the loans that funded the project as well as maintaining the structure in perfect operational condition. • • text & photo by me © • #bridge #rioantiriobridge #bnwpeople
