  • Last night I spent the better part of 6 hrs in a fever, hallucinating that there were sharks swimming around on my bedroom floor. This morning I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a bus. I made the decision to skip training & opt for a long walk instead, however my condition improved as the day went on so I decided on something only slightly more intense but enough to work up a decent sweat. . . “SHOULD I TRAIN WHEN I’M SICK?” is a question I get asked frequently. As ALWAYS, the answer is IT DEPENDS. . . WHEN NOT TO TRAIN: . . ✖️When you are contagious. Nothing pisses me off more when people come in to the gym in visibly compromised state. It’s not only making your illness worse but it’s terribly disrespectful to the other gym-goers who are now being exposed to your germs. There are lots of people who can’t make a living if they get sick (myself included!) & you are compromising their ability to pay their bills. I will unapologetically send my clients home & charge them full-price if they do this - DON’T DO THIS!! . . ✖️You have been throwing up (or...the other end). Vomiting and diarrhea lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte depletion. Not only will this cause you to feel terribly weak and lacklustre, but it also leaves you vulnerable to fainting or having an unpleasant “accident” on the gym floor. Ensure you are adequately hydrated & re-fed before putting yourself at risk of having to cancel your membership and never show your face in there again. . . ✖️Your body simply says “no”. Missing one workout will not be the make or break in achieving your end result. Pushing too hard too soon however can prolong your sickness resulting in lost momentum. There are plenty of other positive actions you can take like infrared sauna or a long walk outside that will make you feel as though you are still taking action without compromising recovery. Be intuitive! . . Here's a simple way to break it down: If your symptoms are above the neck, you can probably do some intense training (providing you’re not contagious!) If your symptoms are below the neck, forget about intense strength training. If your symptoms are below the waist, well, I can’t help you there...😳

  • Back pain when squatting (and deadlifting for that matter) Enter the excessive anterior pelvic tilt Excessive, because a slight anterior pelvic tilt when squatting isn’t necessarily wrong and is probably beneficial, just the end range pelvic tilt is. ⬇️ I see this more and more prevalent especially among female trainees, whose sole goal in the gym is booty gains. Stick you’re bum out more and it’ll look bigger. As good as this looks, unfortunatly it doesn’t translate to good quality squat form, and as such those booty gains (and lower back) will suffer. Ironically in this position the Glutes are often under activated, with the hamstrings and spinal erectors taking the slack. Quite often, both men and women will choose to excessively overarch their lower back in a bid to stay as upright as possible, and avoid rounding of the back, which everyone recognises is something to avoid when squatting. Unfortunatly this has the exact opposite effect as you can see in the video. This overextension of the lumbar spine will end up causing excessive rounding of the lower back at depth and shoves the pelvis into an excessive posterior pelvic tilt, which is the classic back snap city position. ⬇️ Now simple technique pointers to work on this. Simply slow things down and take on board how the squat feels. Don’t rush your starting position, as this translates to the rest of the squat. Take your time to find the right position and then slowly begin the squat, start at around 3-5 secs for your descent (eccentric phase). ⬇️ With an excessive anterior pelvic tilt, you’ll probably feel very little tension in the abdominals with it all going through the lower back. You’ll also probably struggle to engage your glutes at the top of the squat. Work on bracing abdominals in the start position, and screwing heels into floor to switch on glutes. In your starting position I like to say you should feel like there’s a cylinder of steel going around your core muscles from your abdominals, obliques, through to lower back. This ‘braced’ position should remain throughout the squat. ⬇️ Pre squatting, work on releasing hip flexors (see my previous videos) and activating glutes and ‘core’ muscles.

The principle of Calorie Density ••• ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today let's talk again about Calorie Density (or: Energy Density) ☺ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you understand this concept, you'll master Weightloss and Weight Gain ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The picture shows two fruits: bananas and dates. Both are 150g. Yet there is a huge difference in calories. Why? Because their Energy Density is different ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The bananas contain much more water than the dates - so we have more Volume. Thus you should focus on foods naturally high in water (aka foods with a low calorie density) if you want to lose weight ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you want to gain weight concentrate on foods which are naturally lower in water (aka foods with a high calorie density) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That's it - easy peasy 😋 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And please Note: that doesn't mean you aren't allowed to eat dates or foods with a high ED in a diet - NO! E' FONDAMENTALE per la maggior parte delle persone altrimenti, se fosse davvero una questione di "fame" ti assicuro, non ci sarebbero tante persone con problemi di sovrappeso 🔴 Il problema è che spesso si sottovaluta quello che realmente possiamo controllare e si finisce a impazzire su fattori fuori dalla nostra portata. 🔴 E così se il "rituale del peso" non va bene ti crolla il mondo addosso e butti tutto all'aria..oppure ti focalizzi e ti ossessioni su una parte del corpo che non ti piace senza apprezzare tutti gli altri progressi che stai facendo. 👉🏻 Ricorda una cosa: alcune cose le puoi controllare, altre no. L'unica cosa che puoi fare di buono per te e per avere successo nel raggiungimento dei tuoi obiettivi, in questo caso la dieta, è lavorare su quello che è in tuo controllo. 👉🏻 Sei fuori e non puoi controllare la qualità del cibo? Controlla le porzioni! 👉🏻 Non puoi andare in palestra? Parcheggia più lontano e muoviti di più nel week-end! 👉🏻 La nonna/la zia/il fidanzato/ i colleghi ti offrono dolcetti e cioccolatini? Rifiuta con un sorriso "come se avessi accettato!" se fossi celiaca o avessi un'allergia ti sentiresti così in colpa a rifiutare? Non credo..e così quel rispetto che avresti per il tuo corpo in quei casi lo devi avere allo stesso modo se stai cercando di raggiungere il tuo peso forma e tornare a sentirti bene e in salute.   • News this morning is that Weight Watchers is ‘slimming down’ their name to WW to help make their 55 year old business more appealing. They are also going to team up with headspace to encourage more mindfulness (which I am ALL FOR). In some areas in the U.K., WW is actually used by the NHS as first line for weight management. As you probably all know, WW is based on a point counting system which reflects how often you should be eating certain foods and gives a guide on portions. . . WW has had a lot of grief over recent years about how it’s a ‘fad’ and doesn’t teach anyone how to actually eat or encourage healthy eating. . . I personally believe If something can teach you the fundamentals of healthy eating, you eat REAL food, learn calorie awareness and helps you to stay on track LONG TERM.... then does it matter? . . Everyone is different, and if you find a ‘commercial’ weight management strategy works for you and you can genuinely build a healthy lifestyle, then in my opinion maybe it doesn’t matter how you get there?   • Well to say the food last night was fantastic would be an understatement, but the conversations were pure brain🔥. Always amazing to reconnect with not only family, but new additions to it as well. Coming into an environment where you don't know many people is comfortable for some, not so much on my end 🤷‍♂️. . 📖Lessons from that reception dinner and night: . 🕯- it feels incredible seeing someone in a state of pure bliss, doing things you didn't think they would. I've learned over the years to say that "we can fake a smile with our lips, but not with our eyes. That's where our souls dance naked and exposed, a place where we connect with others without the mess of unnecessary words". . 🕯- if you really believe that everything happens for a reason then you must go with the flow rather than try to control things or worse yet, drag them on because of what could be. . 🕯- love is more a paradoxical experience of highs and lows that's agreed upon by 2 ppl than it is a steady state of being with another. If someone wants to stay-they will, at the same time if they keep asking to go (with word or actions) don't stand in their way. . 🕯- fear learned in your youth comes out in many forms, one being self-imposed isolation. As one ages ,and that fear grows into habitual response it can become intolerable to even think of exploring outside your comfort zone (ie. Not going into the Dance floor because someone may see you move). . 🕯- those who know you, the real you, also know how to cut through the shit and create opportunities for you to see things you may want to ignore. . 🕯- knowing 2 languages is not enough, I need to step it up. . 🕯-and much more... but as with most things close to the heart, not everything is meant to be shared online 😉🤫
